What is naturopathic medicine?  How is it different?

Naturopathic medicine works in concert with the body and mind's positive drive for optimal health and it supports the innate ability to heal. Addressing the root cause of disease with a natural approach allows true healing and optimization of health. Naturopathic medical doctors obtain a medical degree and license from an accredited naturopathic medical school. Training is similar to conventional medicine (MD, DO) in that all of the basic sciences, diagnostics, and pharmacology are taught. What is different is that naturopathically trained physicians are taught many more modalities: botanical medicine, acupuncture, joint/spinal manipulation, hydrotherapy, clinical nutrition, regenerative injections, IV therapies/nutrition, injection therapies, environmental medicine, mind-body techniques, homeopathy, minor surgery, traditional Chinese medicine, and more! The biggest fundamental difference is in the medical philosophy. Naturopathically trained physicians learn: - to support the mind and body - to identify and treat the root cause of disease (not mask symptoms) - to build resilience and one's constitution to prevent disease and illness - to treat the whole person - to teach and empower our patients on how to become healthier - that the body has the innate ability to heal We are not ER phsyicians and do not take emergent medical cases. Please call 911 for those types of concerns.

What do you treat?

We treat people rather than the disease itself. This approach differs in that we look at the whole person - mind, body, biochemistry, labwork, imaging, physical exams, history/intake, and more. Addressing all areas and focusing in on the root cause enables true healing. Prospective patients come to us with any and all kinds of ailments, both acute and chronic. There is nothing cookie-cutter about our approach to care - each individual is treated individually. For example, if fatigue is the main concern, then there can be many causes. Focusing on the individual person allows us to hone in on his/her specific cause(s) of disease - it might be caused by poor sleep, inadequate diet/nutrition, high stress, low grade infections, or environmental stressors that can lead to a biological or diagnosable outcome such as autoimmunity, cancer, anemia, hormone imbalance, etc.

What is the initial visit like?

Your initial visit involves a thorough history and intake along with relevant physical exams and evaluation, which can include review of past labwork and imaging studies. The focus of an initial visit is to gather information and to think critically about your case to better understand cause of disease for the best approach to care. The first visit is often 60-75 minutes.
